Valuing Outdoor Play and Experiences with Nature
Children, families, and staff continue to enhance and enjoy the benefits of our Community Build Project! With the inspiration and plans of designer, Rusty Keeler of Planet Earth Playscapes, and with the collaborative efforts of the GCS Playscape Committee and MANY generous contributors and facilitators, our playground redesign dreams finally became a reality.
In May 2002, volunteers rolled up their sleeves and donated their time, talents, and an incredible amount of hard work to create a one-of-a-kind outdoor learning environment for the children of Groton Community School. Our goals were to create a multi-sensory play environment, with creative choices for children to encourage their cognitive, social, and emotional development, as well as build their fine and gross motor skills.
An emphasis was made on natural elements and involved extensive landscaping and the planting of trees, shrubs, perennials, herbs, and vegetables for children to experience the wonder of growing and the seasons. Sound elements were also added, such as wind chimes and outdoor musical instruments.
Current playground highlights include:
- Peace Pole
- Pretend Play Village and Mud Kitchen
- Sand Area and Water Log Feature
- Rubberized Trike Track
- Climbing Structures
- Whizzy Dizzy Spinners
- Garden Picnic Patio
- Memory Garden
- Big Hill Slide and Sled Area
- Dinosaur Den
- Swing Center
- Outdoor Marimba
- Balancing Logs
- Shade Tree Story Spot
- GCS Greenhouse
We thank all the families, community members, and businesses that made our playground redesign possible, and also the many dedicated volunteers who continue to enhance it. It is sure to be enjoyed by young children for many years to come!
