Special Events for The Week of the Young Child™ (WOYC)
What is the Week of the Young Child?
WOYC is an annual celebration hosted by NAEYC to spotlight early learning, young children, their teachers, families, and communities. As an accredited center, we look forward to this special week at Groton Community School every year! This year the celebration is from April 8th through the 12th.
Bucket Filling and Peace
For community outreach, we are spreading the word about the importance of Early Childhood Education by creating and distributing “community buckets”, decorated by GCS children and filled with flowers. Look for our colorful displays in businesses and organizations throughout town later in April! The concepts of “bucket filling” – with kind words and actions – and promoting “Peace” are integral parts of our school’s philosophy. On Thursday and Friday, we are revisiting our Peace Pole (rededicated each fall), and holding school-wide Peace Picnics to share songs and words of “Peace”, along with “Peace Mix” for snack.
Children’s Concert
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 10th as we welcome families to a concert by Cheryl Melody at both 11:15 AM and 1:15 PM. All GCS families are invited, even if it is not a typical school day for your child!
“Creativity Kits” Classroom Collections
Finally, we hope your will join us in collecting materials for our “Creativity Kits”. We have chosen a 2nd grade classroom in Worcester as the focus of this year’s school-wide WOYC project. At GCS, we are so lucky to have access to materials to foster the creativity, literacy, and fine motor skills of our children at school, as do many of our families at home. Our project is to collect art and writing materials for children, many of whom do not have these basic items at home, for homework and creative fun with art and language. Please refer to your child’s classroom communications (emails, notes and/ or newsletters) to learn about the specific materials YOUR classroom is collecting. At the end of the Week of the Young Child, children will create the “Creativity Kits” to be delivered to children in Worcester.
